Aki turned on her signal well in advance of the parking garage. She’d known where she was going, having just been there on Friday. She collected her ticket, traveled up a series of ramps to the sixth floor, and rode the elevator to the ground level. After that, she made her way through a pair of sliding glass doors.

“May I help you?” the hospital volunteer asked, smiling warmly.

“I believe I know where I’m going,” Aki responded, “but thank you.” She walked a long corridor, turning left, and then right. With a hiss, glass doors allowed entry into the ER waiting room. “Sorry it took me so long,” she greeted, hugging Jack. “I assume they’re working on him,” she added, hugging Lizzy, and sitting down.

I don’t think so,” Jack answered, pursing her lips. “Courtney called Charles on the way in and of course he demanded that the Director of Ophthalmology be called in.” She exhaled loudly. “I don’t think she’s here yet.”

“She is now,” Aki responded, standing up, and extending her hand. “Dr. Matsumoto,” she greeted, “it’s good to see you again.”

“And you as well,” Dr. Matsumoto responded, her brow furrowed slightly. “I left you a voicemail,” she added. “I had high hopes of hearing from you by now.”

“Camping trip with no cell service,” Aki responded.

“Ahh, I see,” Dr. Matsumoto said. “Well, I’d love to talk now, but I have a patient who’s been waiting well over an hour.”

“My nephew,” Aki responded, adding, “topical anesthetic, irrigation, and antibiotic within fifteen minutes of the injury.”

“You’re welcome to assist if you’d like,” Dr. Matsumoto invited.

“Thank you,” Aki responded, turning to Jack, and adding, “I’ll see you in a little while.”
